The Commandments: Chaper 8 Empty The Commandments: Chaper 8

After a bath, two more apples, and a night of sleep in a generously offered bed, I awoke to rough shaking from the girl, who was smiling. I arose immediately, been used to the bombings of the area and having to evacuate my room. She was giving off one of those shrill, dramatic shrieks, as women often do when excited. I realized that, in my sleep, I had been undressed, yet not normally, I was completely nude, but she handed me my clothes excitedly. I dressed casually, and she soon looked annoyed at my speed. As I finally finished fitting two white-as-snow socks on my feet, she was yelling in my face.

"Mama said you could see! Mama said you could see!"

She was jumping up and down thrillingly. She drug my out of the bed, and through the room, and nearly down the stairs, where she helped my up and pulled me down. She stopped at the bottom of the steps, looking up at a string hanging from the ceiling. Her mother appeared from the corner with a plate of strawberries. She gave us each two, which were quickly sucked down as the girl Samantha pointed to the string hanging loosely from the ceiling, still jumping as she did so.

"Open it already mama!"

I figured it was an attic. But its just a typical attic, what could possibly be so special that she would drag me from bed like she did? However, I was invited, so I did not express this vocally. Her mother let out a sigh and told her daughter to calm down before pulling the string. As she pulled, the ceiling door opened, and from it came a ladder, which landed just a few feet ahead of me, nearly clipping me on the face. She hurried up them, and from the top, she beckoned me to follow. I did, still sleepy, still slow. I had a terrible grip and nearly fell from the overwhelming drowsiness. However, what I saw on the top woke me up like a lighting strike at twilight.

There, standing in their attic, was a large, crystalline mirror, about my size, and extremely clear. I could see myself perfectly, without a single hint of dust. It reminded me of the beauty of Warsaw, and of the world I'd seen in magazines or in school before the war. And now, looking a this nearly complete stranger in the light reflecting off of this mirror that she, like a crow and the shiniest off coins, stared into, I saw her own beauty.
