The Commandments: Chapter 7
The girls mother came back merely moments after the question had been sprung, asking me if I'd like something to eat. This saved me the embarrassment of having to ask what Jewish meant, and I nodded my head gingerly. She beckoned me to what must have been the kitchen behind a decorative curtain used as a makeshift door. She excused herself from the room, and I couldn't help bu overhear her conversation with her daughter. Thought it was only bits and pieces, I think I understood what they were saying merely by filling in the blanks.
"Did you ask him?" The mother was saying.
"I did."
"What did he say?"
"Nothing, I don' think he is though, his doesn't have an armband."
"Well, you can't be to sure. We can't have people from either side of this war knowing our secret."
More unkempt whispering, though I couldn't make out the words, because the wind had picked up outside. In the past this meant planes, but since then the Luftwaffe had become more technical, and their planes flew higher. I tried not to pick at the fruit basket on the table, or even look at it. When the girl, now clothed in a pretty dress, and her mother, having pinned up her hair, returned, they found me quietly munching on an apple.
I had expected the motherly-figure to be mad, but she only laughed and set another apple in the basket from a small sack beside their door. Normally, only German families had such luxury, but from their conversation, I knew that they were not Germans or Americans.
"Dear, do you have a family? Friends? Relatives?" The mother had sounded genuinely concerned about my well-being. Instead of answering with a yes or no, nod or shake, I said another stupid thing.
"My family got taken away. They might be alive. They might be dead." I then shrugged, and for a moment she had a horrified hint on her face, then it wore away. She was back to her warm smile, and she told me, rather than asked, something that surprised me.
"Would you like a bath? Samantha, go give this poor boy a bath, I bet he's never even seen a tub."
And so, that following hour, I was scrubbed clean by a lady I'd just met. My cheeks red as flames, and my desire to be elsewhere growing, I will never forget her smile. Her warmhearted smile.
