It was a long time since I'd seen so many cattle in one place. Poland. It wasn't as grand as they made it seem in the tourism books, but it was still nice. Way better than the states, that was fairly sure. I was to be on my parents farm any minute now, after hour after hour of traveling on foot, nothing but my backpack to keep me company. In it, I carried a torch, a box of matches, my journal, and an old photograph of my family.
I shuffled through, wondering what I might say as I came across my family, which I could feel just over the next rise. What I saw shocked me. There was a bright glow on the horizon, then the smell of a thousand crude candles all at once. I peered over the rise to see the barn and house burning, and my family standing a few feet ahead, mother weeping.
"I'm back." I managed the small stutter, enough for my father to turn to me and squint his old and weak eyes.
"Kora?" He seemed to whisper my name, and, awaiting no answer, embraced me in his big capable hands. I was nearly as tall as he, at the age of seventeen. He told me the full story. Evidently there had been a conflict amongst some greedy soldiers, and they had burned our home as a way of showing that "No one gets in their way." I clenched my fists and fantasized about how much hurt they would be in should I have arrived earlier. My days spent back in my school in France had taught me that the best way to get around is by making yourself the superior, whether its true or not.
"Where will we go now?" My voice was stronger as my confidence built. My mother clambered over holding my hand as she had so many times in my childhood. I didn't mention it then, but she was trembling, but defiant. She spoke without doubt.
"We must go to your aunt in Warsaw."
Ten Days Later.
We had arrived in Warsaw to find many windows of popular shops now painted over with a strange star. I didn't recognize it, but then again I didn't get out much during school. We had arrived to find my aunt gone, but the house unlocked. Evidently the courier my mother had hired had been here, and so the gate was opened by her husband and we had been given two rooms to sleep in.
I was bored out of my mind after her husband who, after playing cards and serving refreshing cool water, had to go to his workplace out in the fields. I had soon come to realize that Europe was no different than the states I read about in school, and that Africans were treated fairly the same. As I lay in bed that night, I lit a candle with my last match and decided to do write. I didn't take me long to figure out something to write about, and I headlined my journal page.
