The Commandments: Chapter 9 Empty The Commandments: Chapter 9

The mirror was tantalizing. I couldn't help but stare at my reflection as it stared back at me. I was so impressed by the apparent clearness I though about reaching out to touch the copy of me standing straight ahead. Samantha looked the same, but there was a bigger sparkle in her eyes, something I couldn't place. It seemed that she loved this one mirror with a burning passion, and, though we had just met, and I wasn't a big believer in love at first sight, I think that's what I was feeling. Did she feel the same way? I was tempted to ask, but though better of it. The she did something that made me sure that I was correct in assuming she did. She hugged me tightly for no apparent reason, looking in the mirror as she did so.

"Your so small and cute! Normally I wouldn't go for twelve year old's, being fourteen and all, but I can't resist your snugness!" She kissed me on the cheek before heading back down, motioning for me to follow.

This seemed like a dream as I lowered myself down the stares after her. I thought about pinching myself, but again, thought better of it. I didn't want to ruin the chances that surely only a god could have bestowed upon me. That was when I remembered Kora and his friends, and I found myself wondering what had become of them. I would go find them eventually, but part of me also wanted to remain in this house, with these people, for at least a few days.

Samantha pushed into the kitchen, leaving me to push that attic stares back up. I did so, and followed her. This was my first real look at the kitchen, and it to, was awe striking. The floors were of a crystal tile, perhaps quartz, and the sink was a glowing stainless steel that I could see myself in. It was her mother that really stuck out, however. She wore a green bandana that hid most of her black hair, and a painters apron stained with paint. I wondered if she herself were an artist. My question was soon answered.

Samantha led me out a back door. She exclaimed that we should play, running out into a large courtyard where there was a garden full of roses, lilies, assorted herbs, vegetables, and plants I can't name or even categorize. Though that wasn't what made my jaw drop. It was the paintings upon the porch, of tomatoes ripening, apples blooming, and various other things. Who were these people and, more intriguingly, What were they? They seemed to happy in this time of war to even be human, and something about them radiated an otherworldly presence. Why, in all of Warsaw, did plans grow in their backyard? I hadn't time to think, Samantha dragged me out to a game of tag, but I swore I would find answers about these people, because I wanted to be like them. They were perfect.
